Being John Malkovich (1999)

Dreamland Cinema

Once a month, Dreamland Cinema takes you on a journey into cinema dreams & celluloid nightmares. This month we will be helped on our way by everyone’s favourite weirdo, Charlie Kaufman.

A film that burrows into the mind of John Malkovich is an obvious choice for Dreamland – it is both absolutely nightmarish and totally dreamlike simultaneously. Being John Malkovichhas it all: celebrity puppeteers, Catherine Keener in an impossible perfect ’90s wardrobe, an entire office block floor forced to stoop around the water cooler,  an impossibly frizzy haired Cameron Diaz locked in a cage, and to top it all off, body swap sex.

Join us as we launch ourselves into the insane world of Charlie Kaufman, brought to life by Spike Jonze. Was there ever a more perfect pairing?

‘Either Being John Malkovich gets nominated for best picture, or the members of the Academy need portals into their brains’ – Roger Ebert
