Once a month, Dreamland Cinema takes you on a journey into cinema dreams & celluloid nightmares. This month we will be joining forces with Open Colour to bring you Daisies, a classic of the Czech New Wave.
Wild and playful, Chytilová’s two teenage protagonists, both named Marie, chatter their way through this surrealist gem, hopping trains, swinging from chandeliers and eating everything in sight. Whether swathed in table cloths, wrapped in newspaper, or sporting mini ’60s shifts, Marie #1 and #2 have been immortalised on film as eternal style icons.
This politically and aesthetically adventurous film is widely considered one of the great works in feminist cinema, its protagonists boldly looking out on the world from great black kohled eyes.
