#VeryLittleDeaths Vol. 1: OTHELLO
Following the rave success of their production of Howard Barker’s Gertrude – The Cry (“OUSTSTANDING SHOW. Minimal. Visceral. Unforgettable.” – FringeReview), Brief Hiatus have expanded their Little Deaths season with a series of collaborative micro-theatre events entitled #VeryLittleDeaths.
A combination of theatre, installation, live music and nightlife, #VeryLittleDeaths is a political statement, the creation of theatre to fund the making of more theatre, a radical reinvention of classical work for a politically tumultuous time.
Vol 1: OTHELLO will be a 60 minute retelling of one of Shakespeare’s best known tragedies, refocusing the original play’s military setting as an anarchic, politically-motivated militia who have occupied the 88 London Road cafe area. Othello, a Moorish military captain, is joined on the battlefront by his new wife, Desdemona, the daughter of an influential politician. All is not as it seems, however, and Othello’s sanity is brought to breaking point by the vengeful machinations of the one closest to him.
Featuring a cast of Brighton and London actors, and featuring special guests MOK (Brighton-based rap/new wave band) and DJ Michelle Griffin (playing the best of house, tech and bassline), #VeryLittleDeaths Vol. 1: OTHELLO will be Shakespeare as you have never experienced him before.
